江戸の町は、今日もいつも通りの活気で溢れている。
そんな賑やかな町の一角に佇む、小さな休憩処、浮世茶屋。
今日も浮世茶屋の店先では、店主の傘衛門が団子を売っている。
店の奥の席では、文太がいつものように本を読んでいる。
もっとも――本を読んでいるように見えるだけで、実のところ、あまりページは進んでいない。
どうしてかって？
数分前、店先に一人の外国人の女性が現れたのさ。
ブロンズ色の髪。年の頃は二十代前半くらいだろうか。
彼女はショーケースの中の団子をじっと見つめると、少し首をかしげて言った。
「コレハ、ナンデスカ？」
たどたどしい日本語だった。
その声に、茶屋の奥で本を読んでいた文太が、ふと顔を上げたのだ。
そして――そのまましばらくの間、目が離せなくなった。
（わ……外国の人だ……綺麗な人だな……）
文太は、その女性と一瞬目が合った気がして、慌てて視線を本に戻した。
だが、気になって仕方がない。ついつい、見てしまう。
ページをめくるふりをしながら、ちらちらと店先の様子を盗み見ていた。
その様子に、団子を売っていた傘衛門が気づかないはずがない。
傘衛門はちらりと文太の方を見て、にやりと笑った。
女性に向き直り、英語で言う。
“This is dango.
It’s a traditional Japanese sweet.
It’s very good with tea.”
女性の顔がぱっと明るくなる。
傘衛門は続けた。
「うちで、ちょっと休んでいくかい？」
女性は嬉しそうに頷いた。
「ハイ！イタダキマス！」
すると傘衛門は、店の奥に向かって大きな声を出す。
「おーい文太、このお嬢ちゃんの相手をしてやってくれ。」
文太はびくっと肩を震わせる。
「え？！ あ、はい！」
本を読んでいるふりをしていた文太は、さっきからずっと彼女に釘付けだった。
立ち上がりながら、心の中で思う。
（ど、どうしよう……）
女性は席に着くと、にこにこしながら言った。
「ハジメマシテ、ワタシハ、オリビアデス！」
文太は顔を赤くしながらも、なんとか言葉を返す。
“I’m Bunta. B-U-N-T-A, Bunta.
Nice to meet you, Olivia.”
するとオリビアは、ちょっと驚いた顔をした直後に、すごく嬉しそうな顔をした。
“Wow! I’m surprised, but I’m so happy that I can meet someone who can speak English here in Edo.”
文太は必死にその言葉を理解しようとした。
そして、ゆっくりと答える。
“Actually, I’ve been studying English for about ten years.
But I’m not very good at speaking English because I don’t have much experience.”
オリビアはすぐに笑顔になって、日本語で言った。
「ダイジョウブ！ ブンタ、エイゴ トテモ ジョウズヨ！」
文太は少し驚いた。
今、自分は――外国人と英語で会話をしている。しかも、自分の本音まで英語で伝えてしまった。
運ばれてきた団子を一口食べたオリビアが、目を丸くして言った。
“Mmm, tastes good! Is this dango?”
文太は少し照れながら答える。
“Yes, it’s dango. I think the dango here is the best in Edo.”
オリビアは嬉しそうに笑った。
「スゴイデスネ！」
文太は、さらに少し勇気を出して聞いてみる。
“By the way, where are you from, Olivia?”
オリビアは答えた。
“I’m from Australia, Sydney. Do you know Sydney?
Have you ever been there?”
文太は少し考えてから、ゆっくりと言う。
“Australia… I’m not completely sure, but…
Is Australia a country surrounded by the ocean like Japan, but much larger than Japan?”
オリビアの顔がぱっと明るくなる。
「ソウデス！ オーストラリアモ マワリハ ウミ。 ニホント オナジ！」
気がつけば、文太はオリビアと何往復も会話をしていた。
最初はあれほど緊張していたのに。
文太の英語も、オリビアの日本語も、双方決して流暢ではない。
ところどころ詰まりながらだ。
それでも――会話は続いていた。
文太は、自分でも信じられない気持ちだった。
（あれ……？ぼく……ちゃんと会話してる……？）
団子を食べながら、オリビアは嬉しそうに笑っている。
「Mmm…ホントニ オイシイ！オカエリ クダサイ！」
その言葉に、文太は思わず笑ってしまった。
「オリビア、オカエリじゃなくて、オカワリ。Okawari means another one please.」
オリビアは、ぺろっと舌を出して恥ずかしそうにしていたが、顔はキラキラと輝いていた。
そして、ふと気づく。
オリビアは異国の地で、失敗を恐れずに日本語で話そうとしている。
たとえ間違っても、笑い飛ばしている。
伝えたい、という気持ちが、想いが、オリビアからまっすぐ伝わってくる。
文太は、心の中で思った。
（そうか……オリビアだって、頑張ってるんだ。)
(傘衛門さんが言っていたことは、こういうことだったんだ……）
最後に文太は、少し照れながらも勇気を出してオリビアに言った。
“Olivia, I’m really glad I met you today.
I’ll study English harder.
So, let’s talk again.”
オリビアは嬉しそうに頷いた。
「ハイ！ タノシミデス、ブンブン！」
文太は思わず聞き返す。
「ぶ、ブンブン？！」
その様子を見ていた傘衛門が、嬉しそうに笑った。
「良かったな、文太。知らねえ間に、すっかりオリビアと友達だな！」
文太は少し恥ずかしそうに笑った。
「文太、勇気は一瞬、後悔は一生ってな。よーーーく覚えとけよ。」

All English Script
The town of Edo was as lively as ever.
The smell of freshly grilled dango filled the air.
Merchants called out to passersby.
Children’s laughter drifted through the busy street.
In one corner of that cheerful town stood a small teahouse.
Its curtain said:
Ukiyo Chaya.
As usual, Kasamon was selling dango in front of the shop.
In the back of the teahouse, Bunta was reading a book.
At least, that was how it looked.
In truth, he had not turned many pages.
Just then, a young foreign woman stopped in front of the shop.
She had bronze-colored hair and looked to be in her early twenties.
She stared at the dango in the showcase and asked in careful Japanese,
“Kore wa, nan desu ka?”
(What is this?)
Hearing her voice, Bunta looked up from his book.
And then he could not look away.
(A foreigner…)
He quickly looked back down at his book.
But he could not stop glancing toward the front of the shop.
Of course, Kasamon noticed.
He glanced at Bunta and grinned.
Then he turned to the woman and said in English,
“This is dango.
It’s a traditional Japanese sweet.
It’s very good with tea.”
Her face lit up.
Kasamon added in Japanese,
“Would you like to come in and take a little rest?”
She nodded happily.
“Hai! Itadakimasu!”
Then Kasamon called toward the back of the shop.
“Hey, Bunta! Take care of this young lady for me.”
Bunta jumped.
“W-what?! Ah, yes!”
He had been pretending to read, but in fact, he had been completely fascinated by her.
As he stood up, he thought,
(W-what should I do…?)
Once she sat down, the woman smiled and said,
“Hajimemashite. Watashi wa Olivia desu!”
(Nice to meet you. I’m Olivia!)
Bunta turned red, but somehow managed to answer.
“I’m Bunta. B-U-N-T-A, Bunta.
Nice to meet you, Olivia.”
Olivia looked surprised for a moment.
Then her face quickly softened into a bright smile.
“Wow! I’m surprised, but I’m so happy that I can meet someone who can speak English here in Edo.”
Bunta tried hard to understand her words.
Then he answered slowly.
“Actually, I’ve been studying English for about ten years.
But I’m not very good at speaking English because I don’t have much experience.”
Olivia immediately smiled and said in Japanese,
“Daijoubu! Bunta, eigo totemo jouzu yo!”
(It’s okay! Your English is very good!)
Bunta was surprised.
He was talking to a foreigner in English.
And not only that, he had even spoken honestly about how he felt.
Olivia took one bite of the dango that had been brought to her.
“Mmm, tastes good! Is this dango?”
Bunta answered shyly,
“Yes, it’s dango.
I think the dango here is the best in Edo.”
Olivia smiled happily.
“Sugoi desu ne!(That’s amazing!)
Oh! Dango and green tea go really well together!”
Bunta gathered a little more courage and asked,
“By the way, where are you from, Olivia?”
Olivia answered,
“I’m from Australia, Sydney.
Do you know Sydney?
Have you ever been there?”
Bunta thought for a moment and replied slowly,
“Australia… I’m not completely sure, but…
Is Australia surrounded by the ocean like Japan?
But much bigger than Japan?”
Olivia’s face lit up.
“Sou desu! Australia mo mawari wa umi. Nihon to onaji!”
(Yes! Australia is surrounded by the sea too. It’s like Japan!)
Before he knew it, Bunta had gone back and forth with Olivia many times.
At first, he had been stiff with nervousness.
But now it was different.
His English was not fluent.
He still stopped here and there.
Even so, the conversation continued.
Bunta could hardly believe it.
(Wait… am I really… having a conversation?)
Olivia finished her dango happily and said,
“Mm… hontoni oishii! Okaeri kudasai!”
Bunta blinked in surprise.
“Olivia… not okaeri. It’s okawari.”
“Oh!” Olivia laughed and stuck out her tongue.
“Okawari! Okawari kudasai!”
Bunta couldn’t help laughing.
Then he suddenly realized something.
Olivia’s Japanese was not fluent either.
Some of her words were imperfect.
And yet, her wish to communicate came through clearly.
Bunta thought to himself,
(I see…)
(She is trying her best to speak Japanese too.)
(It’s not perfect, but I can feel how much she wants to communicate.)
(So this is what Kasamon meant…)
At the end, Bunta said to Olivia, a little shyly,
“Olivia, I’m really glad I met you today.
I’ll study English harder.
So, let’s talk again.”
Olivia nodded happily.
“Hai! Tanoshimi desu, Bunbun!”
(Yes! I’m looking forward to it, Bunbun!)
Bunta blinked.
“B-Bunbun?!”
Watching them, Kasamon laughed warmly.
“Good for you, Bunta.
Before you knew it, you two became friends.”
Bunta smiled, feeling embarrassed but happy.
Then Kasamon quietly said,
“Courage lasts only a moment, but regret lasts a lifetime.”
