江戸の町は、今日もいつも通りの活気で溢れている。

そんな賑やかな町の一角に佇む、小さな休憩処、浮世茶屋。

店先では、店主の傘衛門（かさえもん）が団子を売っている。

「あ、どうも！ 傘の兄貴！」

「おお、ルカ太郎！今日も、団子食ってくだろ？」

「いや、ちょっと今日は行くところがあって……あ、でも帰りに寄りますね！」

ぺこりと頭を下げると、ルカ太郎はそそくさとその場を走り去っていく。

「なんだ？ ルカ太郎が、珍しく忙しそうにしてるなぁ。」

その背中を見送りながら、傘衛門がぽつりとつぶやいた。

江戸の町を、颯爽と歩くルカ太郎。

ふと、その少し先に、何やら人だかりができているのに気づいた。

「お、なんだなんだ？ありゃ〜文太じゃねーか？あいつ、何してんだ？」

人だかりの中心にいる文太は、老舗の呉服屋の店主と外国人客の間で楽しそうに話している。

どうやら文太は、その二人の間に入って、通訳をしているようだ。

呉服屋の店主は嬉しそうに笑い、外国人のお客さんも、上質な着物が買えて満足げに頷いている。

「文太の英語が、気持ちが、ちゃんと届いた、ってわけか。 あいつ、やるじゃねーか！」

まわりで見ていた通行人たちからも、「外人さん、いい買い物ができてよかったね！」 「坊主、英語が話せてすごいじゃないか！」 「今度はうちの店にも来て、外人さんの対応しておくれよ！」 などと、あちこちから声をかけられている。

「いやぁ〜、文太も成長したねぇ〜。」

そのまま文太には声をかけず、ルカ太郎はそっと、その場を離れていった。

さて、ルカ太郎が入ったのは、「仙太郎」という和菓子屋。

その店定番の「おはぎ」を注文し、店内でゆっくりとお茶と共に味わうことにした。

運ばれてきたおはぎを、ひと口でぱくり。

「うーん……こりゃうまい。 青じそが、いい仕事してる。」

頷きながら、今度は、きなこのおはぎも口に運ぶ。

「こいつぁ、黒豆のきなこか！ こりゃ絶品だ。 鼻に抜けるこの香ばしい……」

と、ふと窓の外に目をやると、こちらをじーっと見つめる人がいた。

「ぶ……文太！！」

「ルカ太郎さん！ こんなところで何してるんですか！？」

「見りゃ〜わかるだろ、おはぎ食ってんだよ！ いいから、おめーもこっち来い！」

ルカ太郎は文太に、店内に来るよう促した。

不思議そうな顔をした文太が店に入ってきて、ルカ太郎の向かいに座り、ちょっと考えてから、粒あんのおはぎを注文した。

「おはぎ食べてる、のは分かりましたけど…ルカ太郎さん、お一人ですか？」

「おう、一人だよ。 俺はな、甘い物が好きなんだよ。」

「お一人で甘味……それなら、浮世茶屋へ行けばいいじゃないですか？」

「まぁ、そうなんだがよ……。」

あぁ……面倒なことになりそうだ……

あんまり大きな声じゃ言えねぇが、俺は、世間じゃ「甘太郎」って名前で呼ばれてる。

甘味屋をあちこち食べ歩いては記事を書いて回る、いわゆる甘味ライターってやつだ。

最近じゃ、甘太郎が記事で取り上げりゃ、どんな店でもたちまち人が押し寄せる——なんて噂まで立ってやがる。 一切顔出しをしないで書き続けているが、俺が甘太郎であることは、文太には言えない……

「ええー！ だったら、浮世茶屋を甘太郎さんの記事で取り上げてくださいよ！」

そう言うに決まってる。

俺は……できねぇ……。 あの店だけは……。 あんなうまい団子、間違いなく、江戸で一番だ。

有名店になって大勢の人が押し寄せちまったら、好きな時に行って、ゆっくり食えなくなる。

文太や常連のお客さんたち、そして、傘の兄貴にきっと迷惑がかかる。

文太は不思議そうに首をかしげるが、なぜか、それ以上は聞いてこない。

文太が注文したおはぎがきた。 そして、早速頬張っている。

「んんー！うまい！」

「だろ？ ここのおはぎはな、青じそが効いてんだ。」

ふと、さっき町で見かけた文太の活躍を思い出し、「そういや、おめぇ…」 と言いかけたが、やめておいた。

その代わりに、ぽつりと言う。

「文太、きなこおはぎも食ってみろ。ここは俺が出すから、遠慮なく食えよ。」

「いいんですか！やったぁ〜！なんだか今日はいい事が続くなぁ〜。」

「おう、そりゃ〜よかった。」

あからさまに喜ぶ文太を見て、ルカ太郎も目を細めて一緒に笑った。

「文太、帰りに傘の兄貴んとこ寄って、一緒に団子食ってくか？」

「ええ？！ まだ食べるんですか？」

「あったりめーよ。 あそこの団子は……別腹だ。」

きなこを口にいっぱい付けて、文太が大笑いした。

「ルカ太郎さん、どんだけ甘い物が好きなんですか！！」

……もう少しだけ、みんなには黙っておこう。

あそこは、俺にとって、いや、俺たちにとって、大事な場所だからな。

……言わぬが花、ってやつか。

今日も、江戸の町は、静かに時が流れている。

※本作はフィクションですが、和菓子屋「仙太郎」さんは実在のお店です。1886年創業、京都に本店を構える老舗和菓子店で、関西・中部・関東の主要百貨店にも出店されています。青じそおはぎ・黒豆きなこおはぎはもちろん、季節ごとに登場する和菓子もどれも絶品。筆者も大ファンで、季節の移ろいを仙太郎さんの和菓子で感じています。

Ukiyo Chaya Story #6: Iwanu ga Hana — Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid

The town of Edo was as lively as ever.
In one corner of that busy town stood a small resting place called Ukiyo Chaya.
As usual, Kasaemon was selling dango in front of the shop.
“Hey, Kasa-brother!”
“Oh! Lukataro! You gonna grab some dango today, too?”
“Not today. I’ve got somewhere to be… but I’ll stop by later!”

With a quick bow, Lukataro hurried off.

“That’s unusual… Lukataro looking busy like that,”
Kasaemon muttered as he watched him go.

Lukataro walked briskly through the streets of Edo.
Then he noticed a crowd gathering ahead.

“Huh? What’s going on…? Wait—that’s Bunta, isn’t it?”

At the center of the crowd, Bunta was talking cheerfully between a kimono shop owner and a foreign customer.
It looked like he was acting as an interpreter.

The shop owner smiled with relief, and the foreign customer nodded happily, satisfied with his purchase.

“So his words… and his feelings… really got through.”
“He’s doing pretty well.”

People around them started calling out:
“Glad you found something nice!”
“You’re amazing, kid! Speaking English like that!”
“Come help at my shop next time, too!”

“Bunta… He’s grown…”

Without saying a word, Lukataro quietly left the scene.

The place Lukataro headed to was a sweets shop called “Sentaro.”
He ordered their famous ohagi and decided to enjoy it slowly with some tea.

He took a bite.

“Mmm… this is good. That shiso flavor really hits.”

He nodded, then tried the kinako version.

“This one too… black soybean kinako? That aroma is incredible.”

Just then, he felt someone staring at him through the window.

“…B-Bunta?!”

“What are you doing here?!” Bunta said.

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m eating ohagi!” Lukataro replied.

“Get in here already!”

Bunta came inside, still looking confused, and sat right in front of him.
After a moment, he ordered ohagi, too.

“I get that you’re eating… but you’re here alone?”

“Yeah. I just like sweets.”

“If that’s the case, why not go to Ukiyo Chaya?”

“Well… yeah…”

…This could get troublesome.

I don’t usually say this out loud, but… people know me as “Amataro.”
A sweets writer who travels around trying different shops.

Lately, people say that if Amataro writes about a place,
it becomes popular overnight.

That’s why… I can’t tell Bunta.

He’d definitely say:
“Then you should write about Ukiyo Chaya!”

But I can’t.
Not that place.

Those dango… they’re the best in Edo.
If it becomes famous, it’ll be crowded all the time.
I won’t be able to just drop by and enjoy it quietly.

More than that… it would cause trouble for Bunta, the regulars…
and Kasa-brother.

Bunta tilted his head, puzzled.
But for some reason, he didn’t ask any further.

Bunta’s ohagi arrived.
He took a bite immediately.

“Mmm! This is so good!”

“Told you. It’s the shiso.”

Lukataro remembered what he saw earlier in town.
He almost said something — but stopped.

Instead, he said:

“Hey, try the kinako one too. My treat.”

“Really?! Yes! Man, today just keeps getting better!”

“Glad to hear that.”

Seeing Bunta smile like that, Lukataro quietly smiled, too.

“Hey Bunta, wanna stop by Kasa-brother’s place on the way back?”

“What? You’re still going to eat more?”

“Of course. Dango there doesn’t count. That’s a different stomach.”

Bunta burst out laughing, kinako all over his mouth.

“How much do you love sweets?!”

…Maybe I’ll keep it to myself a little longer.

That place…means something to us.

…Some things are better left unsaid.

And today, once again, time flowed gently through Edo.

*This story is a work of fiction, but the Japanese sweets shop “Sentaro” is a real establishment. Founded in 1886, this long-established wagashi shop is headquartered in Kyoto and also has locations in major department stores throughout the Kansai, Chubu, and Kanto regions of Japan. Their shiso ohagi and black soybean kinako ohagi are exceptional, and their seasonal wagashi are equally wonderful. The author is a longtime fan and enjoys experiencing the changing seasons through Sentaro’s sweets.
